The Hopi Kachina is hand-carved out of the cottonwood tree root. The Ogre Katsinas act as disciplinarians for Hopi children, visiting homes to question the children about their behavior and chores. They may return to check on the progress of the children, even causing fear to keep the children’s behavior in check.
