Don Supplee | Coral, Turquoise, and 18k Gold Hopi Maiden Necklace

In this piece, Don Supplee reflects Hopi cultural tradition through contemporary form. The necklace unfolds in two strands of Mediterranean coral with turquoise nuggets and delicate 18k gold disk accents.

Suspended at the center, the inlaid pendant is a stylized Hopi Maiden inlaid with Lone Mountain, Kingman, and Candelaria turquoise; the figure is framed in gold and brought to life through an intricate composition of finely cut stones.

Though visually striking, it invites contemplation, as all of Supplee’s best work does—not simply worn but carried.

This bracelet by Norbert Peshlakia is made of sterling silver. He added a row of detailed hand stamp fish designs. Norbert is known for his award-winning stamps, which he creates and designs himself. Norbert’s contemporary style is known worldwide and has been shown in multiple museums across the Southwest. The outer edges of this bracelet are polished, while the center with the fish design is satin and textured.

These sterling silver earrings, designed in the distinctive shield style by artist Sonwai (Verma Nequatewa), incorporate vibrant inlays of coral, turquoise, and lapis. Each earring is further adorned with delicate, fine-line gold accent spacers, which add contrast against the inlay and shine from the sterling silver. The reverse side of the earrings features Sonwai’s signature, and they are designed as post earrings. Sonwai learned jewelry-making from her Uncle Charles Loloma and continues to combine contemporary jewelry with Hopi cultural traditions.

This week, @scottsdale_artwalk in @oldtownscottsdale celebrates the 50th Anniversary of the Thursday Night ArtWalk on April 3rd, 2025 — a true milestone for the art scene!

To honor the occasion, we’re sharing a special photo from 1987 featuring my great aunt Lovena Ohl and the iconic Charles Loloma, standing outside her gallery on Marshall Way.

Lovena Ohl was a pioneering gallerist who played a vital role in elevating Native American art in the Southwest. Her gallery became a cultural hub where artists like Charles Loloma — the legendary Hopi jeweler — could present their work to wider audiences. Loloma’s bold fusion of tradition and modern design found strong support through Lovena, who believed deeply in championing Indigenous voices and artistry.

After Lovena passed, her legacy lived on through Bill Faust, who had worked closely with her and the artist she represented. Bill went on to establish Faust Gallery in 1996, now located on Main Street in Scottsdale. Today, Faust Gallery continues to represent some of the most respected Native artists in the country, keeping Lovena’s original mission alive: celebrating the creative excellence and cultural significance of American Indian art and jewelry.

From Marshall Way to Main Street — the spirit of Lovena Ohl and her contributions to the arts are still felt every Thursday night.

This ring is a powerful example of Charles Loloma’s visionary work. A true icon of Hopi contemporary jewelry, Loloma redefined Native art in the 20th century by blending traditional materials into modern style. The ring is made of 18k gold and features inlaid stones consisting of pink coral, mediteranian coral, sugilite, fossilized ivory, and fine-line gold accent spacers wrapping around the entire gold frame. His bold color contrasts (like the orange and purple here) showed how Native jewelry was brought to a modern level of artistry. The elevated, tiered design is classic Charles Loloma—rising like a landscape of the Hopi Mesa.
